In other words, these algorithms, whether it's Google, whether it's Facebook, they can all destroy your business. How do you make sure you can still survive? Because look, when these algorithm updates happen, some business go down, but other businesses go up. In other words, your losses are typically someone else's gains.Today, I want to discuss how to make sure algorithm change doesn't destroy your business. Five sure-fire tactics. ____________________________________________ Tactic 1: Build up, one platform at a time. You don't want to put all your eggs in one basket. Sure, focus is important, and the reason I say one at a time is you don't have the time to do five or 10 platforms, all at once. You want to look, where is your ideal audience on? Where's your ideal consumer on? Your ideal persona, right? Think about your ideal customer. Wherever they're on, start with that channel. Then, start with the second place that they're on, then the third place, and then, you go from there. In the long run, of course, you want to take an omnichannel approach. Yes, at first, even though you only can do one at a time, but if you don't expand to all of them, if that one goes down, you can be screwed. That's why I'm a big believer in the omnichannel approach. Typically, what works for one social network, works for another. What works for one search engine, works for another. Tactic 2: When a tactic sounds too good to be true, it probably is. You know when people tell you automated bots to follow and unfollow people, block out ways to build links, automated content generation, automatic traffic generation, whatever the heck that means. Any time it's too easy, it's probably over-used, it's going to get you penalized, it's going to screw your business, in the long run. Tactic 3: You don't work for the algorithm. You want to help humans. It's not about pleasing Facebook. It's not about pleasing Twitter. It's about pleasing humans. Facebook wants to do what's best for humans, in an ideal world. So does Google, so does Twitter, so does Instagram. That's why you have focus your marketing on humans, right? So, for example, what makes your audience tick? What content formats do they like? What topics do they love? What are their hardest challenges? What are the goals that they're trying to accomplish? If you can help them with this stuff, you'll do better. If you can't, you won't. This will also protect you from algorithms in the long run because you're always trying to provide value. Providing value usually means that's best for people. You'll also want to make sure that you're engaging with people. Are you engaging through comments? Are they even engaging with your content that you're creating? Tactic 4: Always use new features that come out. Whether it's FAQ snippets on Google, right? Ideally, that would be right when it comes out. Or Google My Business has a new feature, you use that. Or Facebook has videos now where they're going live, or Instagram has Stories. Whatever it may be, use the latest and greatest, because typically, when they release these new features, they promote them so hard in their algorithms they give you extra love if you leverage them. Listening to things like earnings calls from all these big digital marketing channels like the Googles and the Facebooks of the world. It helps you, and tells you what they're focusing on next. Tactic 5: Keep testing new formats. Never rely on what works now. It won't always work in the future. Algorithms always change, people always change, competitors change. You need to do your research. Use tools like Ubersuggest to see what works in your space, and what doesn't. See what made it work, what format is it in? What message type is it? What captions are they using? What gaming strategy? Are they asking for comments? Are they asking to tag friends? Are they giving away stuff? Are they doing contests? So don't just ride or jump the bandwagon and follow everyone else, look for unique strategies that other people aren't leveraging yet. And typically, these earnings calls that I discussed earlier, or where they're going with their roadmap or features, that'll all help you get that edge. Sure, eventually you want to leverage all the channels out there but when you're starting, you need to just pick one channel. It's hard to deliver great content on many channels at the same time. You also want to look like "Hey, where's my audience hanging out?" Are they hanging out mainly on Facebook? LinkedIn? Twitter? Sure, I have an audience on Facebook, I have an audience on YouTube, I have one on LinkedIn, but did you know that I generate more revenue from LinkedIn than any of the other social platforms? It could be because LinkedIn is a B2B social network and I'm in the B2B space but the point I'm trying to make is not all channels are equal, even if you're getting the engagement. Step 2 – Document your journey, your struggles. If you look at Gary Aviv, he's done really well, not because he creates a ton of content. He's actually just living his life and documenting it and he has someone following him around. Now, why does this work? Well, people are curious about your life. Just think about Keeping Up With The Kardashians, they're known globally, why? Because they just live their lives. People like that. They prefer that over something that's very scripted. Step 3 – Research topics that people are interested in. You can't just create content around whatever you want, it has to be related to the industry you're in. So you can use Quora, what are the most popular questions people are typing in and answering on Quora? Look at Facebook groups, what are the most popular ones in your niche? What are they talking about? Have you ever leveraged the content ideas report in Ubersuggest? It shows you all the popular content based on social shares, search traffic and backlinks. Same with the keyword ideas report in Ubersuggest, it shows you all the popular keywords that people are typing in. Whether they're questions, prepositions, comparisons or just general keyword suggestions from Google Suggest. Step 4 – Want to do is listen to what people are saying in the comments and create content around that as well. Look, comments are super important, people who engage with you matter. If someone takes the time to leave a comment, you should take the time to respond. Now, your response could be a blog post, it could be a podcast episode, it could be a video, it could just be that you respond to their comment but by helping people who are leaving comments, you're going to build rapport with them, your brand's going to grow and in the long run, it's going to create a huge, massive effect. Then, you want to reach out to the people personally who inspired you to create that content. Step 5 – Is to do a podcast and interview tour. Here's what I mean, two things, one, you search on Google for podcast interviews with other people in your niche. You want to make a big list of all those people who are a good fit for you to also be on their show. And of course, make sure you're also considering creating your own podcasts as well. When you're on all these other podcasts, you could promote your own podcast and get more and more regular listeners. Step 6 – Interview other authority people in your niche. If you want to be a huge personal brand, if you want to build up your brand and be well known as an authoritative figure more than most people, the quickest way to get there is to associate yourself with people who are already well known. That'll help the content spread, that'll help you get more traction, that'll help you build out a brand. ____________________________________________ The first tip I have for you is to avoid having too many banner ads. Look, if you have one or two banner ads, and they're relevant, that's not an issue. Limit the banner experience to one or two per page. Don't do more than that, because then it just becomes a site full of ads instead of text. The reason most people have banner blindness is that all the ads they see are irrelevant. So, if you want to do really well, make sure your ads are relevant. Only have a few per page and not many more than that. The second tip I have for you is pop-ups don't convert well for sales, but they can work well for emails. So if you're trying to monetize your site, a lot of people are like, "oh let me just do pop-ups and get people to buy my product or service right then and there in the pop-up." It's very rare that pop-ups generate a lot of sales directly. Indirectly, though, they generate a lot of emails. The third tip I have for you retarget your users with relevant based offers. What you'll find is a lot of companies will pay you money, not only to put their ad on your site, but to show your users their products and services. So you can remarket. You can do a deal with these companies. Now, there is a caveat with this. You want to make sure your privacy policy and terms of service, I know a lot of countries don't care, but I recommend that you be very transparent and you let people know in your privacy policy and your terms of service what you're doing and that you're also monetizing by remarketing to those people, other people's products and services within your space. You can also do this with your own products and services as well. So that way you don't have to blanket your own site with tons of ads for your own products or services. But I do recommend that you put that in your privacy policy and terms of service. That way people know what you're doing. And then once you're getting sales from that, you should consider creating custom audiences. You could do this on tools like Facebook. Google has something similar as well. And this allows them to show you other relevant users who are very similar to the ones that already bought and converted from you. The fourth tip I have is only present really highly relevant offers. The moment you just go out there with all the ad networks, and you put these irrelevant offers and services and ads in front of your audience, you're going to lose their trust. Last but not least, before I wrap over this video, I want to go over some unique monetization methods that you're probably not leveraging that work well, that aren't spammy, and they tend to make way more money than just putting ads on your site. First, create a info product. Example of this is Pat Flynn's Power-Up Podcasting course. It's a great way to learn podcasting. His audience loves it, and he can sell it and make good money. A second monetization offer which works very well is coaching offers. You see a ton of examples from Mike Matthews from Legion Athletics, all the way to the Rush Raffinose. They all do coaching. It works extremely well. The third thing you could do is gate content. You go to TechCrunch.com, you'll notice that they have exclusive content. You've got to pay money for that. Whether it's monthly fee or a yearly fee, it works well. The fourth example, build a freemium tool. If you're in the weight loss category, you can do a daily calorie consumption calculator, and then upsell them into a diet app. Last but not least, speaking gigs. I got to a conference, you see me on stage. Sometimes I do speak for free. That's actually very, very rare. In almost all cases, I can get 25 grand on the low end to 50 grand in most cases just for an hour speech. ____________________________________________ Step 1: Identify your target audience. Where are people who you want to target? Where do they hang out? What kind of content do they read? What are their interests? What are their fears? What are their goals, their motivation? What's their typical age? Step 2: Identify what your ideal audience wants. Now that you know them, I want you to go to Amazon, find books within your niche, that people are writing about and look at the two and three star reviews. The reason you'll look at the two and three star reviews, is people are usually complaining about what that book is missing. People only will leave a comment and share that and rate it really bad if they truly feel that something's missing that's important. That helps you figure out what people really want within your space. Step 3: Create the most epic, mind-blowing resource on one of these topics. Create a bullet list point, right? Every single idea that you got from your research as it relates, you want to create a list and figure out, all right this is what I'm going to cover into this topic. This is what everyone wants to know. Then, go to Ubersuggest and look at the content ideas report. When you're in Ubersuggest, you're putting those key words in within your space. Step 4: Pick something that isn't popular in all of those categories. You can't just rely on SEO traffic. You got to now look at referral traffic and social. That's why you have to look at all of that. You want to bullet out all the ideas. Go through what are these pieces missing that they haven't covered? How can I make something better? Go read the comments on these blog posts. What are people complaining about? What are people recommending? The reason being is eight out of 10 people will read your headline, but only two out of 10 will click through and read the rest. Now of course, you're not going to use 25 headlines. The reason you have 25 is, you want to eliminate 20 that you think are shitty or mediocre. You want to take the best five and then cross source your headlines. So you go to your favorite Facebook group in your niche, you do a poll, you ask everyone, hey, which headline do you think is the most appealing? Get their opinions. Pick the one that has the highest votes. Now, of course, if you have a better way of modifying it, feel free to do that. But usually, you got your winner if that's what everyone tells you, that that's a winner. Now of course, you've created your content, you've gotten your headline, you've published it. You want to then create a gated content upgrade. That'll get you hundreds of social shares. That's the next step. When you create the gated content to get you the social shares, you do this by offering a PDF, a ebook, a crash course, complimentary resource, and if you're on Word Press, you can use OnePress Social Locker. That way, if people want that free ebook or guide, they have to share your content to get it. Step 5: Use your epic content as a promotion opportunity. See, when you write this content, you may be getting ideas from other places, other people's blogs. Link out to them. Let them know that you linked out to them and ask them to share your content. Ask them to link back to you. When you do this, you'll get more traffic. Typically, if you ask for a share, it's easier and you'll get a higher take rate than if you ask for a link back. Link back helps you with referral traffic and search rankings in the long run. Step 6:Have push notifications enabled on your site. That way, when people opt in through the push notification and you create a new blog post, you can send a blast out to all of them and get those people back. This was the challenge that I published on my old blog that I no longer own, Quick Sprout. In which I said, hey anyone can create a business that generates 100k a month and let me show you, and I can do that within 12 months. Any experiment that you do that people can follow along with you from beginning to end, and it shows people how they can do something step by step or how they can learn from it step by step, typically works extremely well. Just like those fit loss and weight loss challenges. They work because people can follow along and try to do it themselves. They can relate to it. You give them step by step instructions. Again, it can work really well. The second experiment that I did is: Who is Neil Patel? Now, you may not be familiar with that experiment, but years ago, what I did is I had a lot of Instagram influencers hold up a sign with my name on it. So, overall, that experiment brought into the brand awareness. People are googling for my name. I had a huge uplift in traffic, and more importantly, I had a huge uplift in rankings as well. Now, the downside with that is a lot of people that were holding up my sign, they're half-naked men and half-naked women. I would try to control that. I wouldn't necessarily go through agencies. I can't blame the agencies. At the end of the day, the buck falls on me for doing it, but you should be more careful and picky. When I was picking people to help me with that experiment. I should have been very strategic and been like please send me each of their profiles, I want to make sure that they have engagement. I want to make sure that the images are appropriate, etc. But, that provides a huge lift in brand inquiries, and Google loves brand inquiries, so the more brand inquiries you have for your name, the higher your organic rankings will increase. My third experiment: Expanding to Brazil. It was one of my most favorite experiments. And the reason being I got to learn and get to know markers from all around the world. I started with Brazil, eventually, I went into Germany and Italy and Japan and China and all these other regions. But Brazil was the first country I really expanded into and the thing I learned is, when you want to expand into a region, you need partners there, feet on the ground. Without feet on the ground and people who understand the cultures, people who can be there to promote you, you're not going to do that well. We saw huge potential in that country because I was at a conference. I saw that a lot of people there, they want to learn, they have money, why not expand. They have good GDP. GDP is important. Look for countries with big GDP. Not necessarily the GDP per capita, I found that the bigger the GDP, and if the GDP per capita is smaller, it's okay, you can still do well. And when I went into these regions, the reason this experiment was amazing and awesome is English is competitive. Portuguese, not so much. The reason being is Apple, Google, Facebook, Microsoft, they're no longer just US companies. They're just companies that are American. They're global companies. The last experiment, and this is one of my funniest, if not my favorite experiment overall, is Ubersuggest. I bought it for roughly 100 and something thousand dollars. I think 120 thousand and I had a mission. Started off as a simple keyword tool but then it revealed to be really huge, potentially, right? In which I can add in site data, tracking rankings, SEO analyzer, backlinks, all this kind of stuff and the reason I love this is the tool now makes up the majority of my traffic. It's more popular than my text-based content. Clicks to your site every time you post on Facebook, has been continually decreasing and dying over time. But does that mean you should give up? Of course not. ____________________________________________ Now, before we jump into how you can fix this, most people would be like, "Well, if I want to fix this "and get more traction out of Facebook, "I should just leverage Facebook ads, right?" Well, yeah, you can leverage ads, but that means you're going to have to pay continually for every single click driven to your site. But here's the thing that most people aren't talking about. You want to start focusing your attention, at least your organic attention, from posting on your page, to creating a Facebook group. Now, back in 2018, during the second quarter, Facebook had an earning call. And during that earning call, they reported that 200 million members are part of meaningful groups. And the key there is meaningful groups, groups that are actually active, that are growing, that have engagement. Now, that number has continually been growing. It's been more than doubling from the previous year. And then it keeps just going and going from that. And where do you think those private experiences happen? So, look, you now know that you need to be leveraging groups. So, what should you be doing if you want to keep getting more traffic through groups? Now, this group doesn't have to be your own group, you could also leverage other people's group as well. I, of course, would recommend that you create your own group, but at the same time, you should also engage with other groups as well. The next tip I have for you is, don't just post new articles or videos in the group. On the flip side, if you keep posting content and it just links back to your site, only a small portion of the people are actually going to see it, and the less and less people engage in the future, the less times when they log into Facebook, they're going to continually see that in their newsfeed. That's why it's important, every once in a while, to keep rotating up what you're posting, and making sure they're getting high engagement. More users see your content, more users will then see your content when you post a link back to your site. The other thing that you want to do, is start engaging through tools. So, most people on Facebook when they want traffic, they just want to say, "Hey, let me post, "let me get people to click back to my site." Even videos, you may even leverage other tips when it comes to increasing engagement, but you're not using tools like MobileMonkey or ManyChat. MobileMonkey or ManyChat, whatever one you want, they both have free plans if I'm not mistaken, at least ManyChat does, when you end up posting your content and you want to get all these people on your groups, your fan pages to engage with you, you can leverage Facebook Messenger and build your own subscriber base, kind of like an email list, but for Facebook Messenger, and then through there you can continually message and message people. Now, to give you an idea, according to TechCrunch, 1.3 billion, that's billion with a b, use Facebook Messenger. That's right, 1.3 billion people use Facebook Messenger and each and every single month. so anytime you post a new article, Facebook Messenger's the easiest way, you just send out a blast. You can do that through, again, MobileMonkey or ManyChat, and then all those people will get notified on the links, come back to your site. We're seeing the open rates change drastically. And if that doesn't convince you that you need to be using Facebook Messenger, the second most downloaded app of all time, is Facebook Messenger, according to App Annie. Can you guess what the number one app of all time is? It's Facebook. Last, but not least, be consistent.
